ABOUT US

logo tan color.png

Founded in the early 1890's during a time of segregation in Roanoke, Virginia, the historically African American, yet multicultural congregation of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (USA) grew out of a segregated Sunday School for African Americans to become an important center of worship and community in the Gainsboro neighborhood of the city.

In continuing the legacy of resilient faith, education, and civil rights, the members and friends of Fifth Avenue follow the love of Christ by the intentional welcome of all as we work for justice and foster hope in our communities.

At Fifth Avenue, a congregation in the Presbytery of the Peaks and the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic of the Presbyterian Church (USA), we actively create a place where each one is unapologetically embraced with the compassion and love found in God-in-Christ

Mission

By following the love of Christ, we at Fifth Avenue intentionally welcome all as we work for justice and foster hope in our communities

Vision

Creating communities which embrace one another with the compassion and love found in God-in-Christ

To carry our Mission and Vision into the community, the members and friends of Fifth Avenue partner with and participate alongside various organizations (whether locally or in the places where they live) laboring to address issues of social and cultural justice, food insecurity, and systemic poverty.

We're a Matthew 25 church

Presbyterian Church (USA)

For over four centuries, Presbyterians have been responding to the call of Jesus Christ, taking the gospel into the world and bearing witness to Christ’s saving love to the ends of the earth. Today the Holy Spirit is still on the move, calling us to share in what God is doing in the world.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) affirms the distinctive beliefs of the Reformed Tradition, which date back to principles articulated by John Calvin in the 16th century.

  • The affirmation of the sovereignty of God

  • That God calls us to service in the world

  • That our life together is to be ordered in ways which enable all members to flourish

  • That God calls us to generous stewardship of what we have

  • That we are to stay alert to the human tendency to idolatry and tyranny and respond to God’s call to work for a society that seeks justice.

By engaging in societal issues from a biblical perspective, the church recognizes God’s sovereignty over every aspect of human life as the church seeks to earnestly discern the will of Christ, and to speak and act with humility and love.
